Early Years Foundation Stage

All areas of the curriculum are addressed through the seven Areas of Learning in the Foundation Stage. This is implemented by planning in a cross curricular approach, allowing children to either access them as a child initiated activity or an adult-led activity.

Music Curriculum Years 1-6

Children will be taught to:

  • Listen and appraise
  • Play musical games
  • Sing
  • Play instruments including glockenspiel, recorder, ukulele, keyboards and untuned percussion
  • Play by ear and begin to read musical notation
  • Improvise
  • Compose
  • Perform

Lessons will be linked to the topic the children are currently studying with their class teacher where possible. Other units of work will stand alone.

Children in Year 3 and 4 are taught to play a musical instrument with a specialist music teacher from Entrust.

A Whole School Approach

At Ravensmead we are a ‘Singing school!’ We regularly sing together as staff and pupils in class, in hymn practice and assemblies.

Music is central to school life at Ravensmead with lots of opportunities to create a real WOW factor! Children will perform at various points during the year: in class assemblies, Harvest festivals, Carol services, Christmas Productions and Summer Productions.

Extra-Curricular Music

We are very excited to take part in the Young Voices concerts series at Manchester Arena. Young Voices are the largest school choir concerts in the world! Find out more at

Instrument Tuition

Children are given opportunities to learn to play the recorder in lunchtime recorder clubs.

We offer Key Stage 2 children opportunities to learn to play the flute, clarinet and guitar in small groups with specialist music teachers from Entrust Music and Performing Arts Services.
