Y3/4 Coal mining morning

After cancellation in the Spring term due to the snow, on Wednesday 23rd May, the year 3/4 children had their coal mining morning in school. Everyone arrived looking like they hadn’t had a wash for weeks; we’d asked the children to come dressed as miners and they all looked fabulous!

The morning focussed around the history of the coal mines in the local area and included a visit from members of Apedale Heritage Centre. Throughout the morning the children completed three activities including looking at and sketching artefacts linked to the mining industry, learning about the Diglake disaster, a local mining disaster and they also had a presentation from our visitors who brought in a range of artefacts and slides for the children to look at. One of our year 4 children, Oliver, also donated some of his grandad’s wage slips, from when he was a miner, to the Heritage Centre.

Everyone had a lovely morning and we say a huge thank you to the people at Apedale for their support in school. Why not take a look at the things that they have going on there and the different events that they have coming up, it’s a little treasure on our doorstep! www.apedale.co.uk
